The Big Poundbury Conversation taking place over Summer 2023 shows that most people enjoy living, working in or visiting Poundbury, an innovative urban extension to the county town of Dorchester.

Respondents mention the architecture, green spaces, attractive squares, shops, cafes and restaurants, and the open space of The Great Field, as particular reasons to enjoy being here. They are proud to have a much higher than average percentage of affordable housing. There are challenges too of course, around social isolation, traffic, and the cost of living. The Big Conversation will report back on findings and make recommendations in Autumn 2023.

The beautiful Dorset countryside, and historic sites such as Poundbury Camp and Maiden Castle, are all within walking distance of this part of Dorchester.

Parking is free in Poundbury, although we recommend walking, cycling or catching the bus from town as a more enjoyable, healthy and sustainable option. The street layout is designed to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists, and a 20mph limit is being discussed to make this a safer and more attractive mode of travel.

Poundbury is very much part of Dorchester. The town centre is within a 30 minute walk or a short bike or bus ride, and facilities include two cinemas, supermarkets and a wide range of restaurants and shops. The refurbished Dorset Museum is worth a visit, as are Borough Gardens (on a sunny day!). Residents living in other parts of town make good use of Poundbury facilities including the Great Field, Damers First School, the independent shops and cafes.
