Exciting news for cyclists and those looking to travel sustainably! Monday, March 31st marked the addition of two new Beryl Bike bays in the Dorchester area. With the growing success of the Beryl bike-share scheme, these new bays will help make sustainable transport more accessible than ever.
Where to Find the New Bays
In Poundbury, the bike bay is located by the electricity substation in Hamslade Square. To find it, stand in Queen Mother Square and look towards the Monart Spa; it's just to the right of it. The second bay is at Dorchester South Station, making it easier for commuters and visitors to hop on a bike right as they step off the train.
Why Use Beryl Bikes?
The Beryl Bike scheme has been hugely successful, with an impressive 95% parking compliance rate. It's not only convenient but also plays a big role in building a greener, cleaner transport network across Weymouth, Portland, and Dorchester. Plus, it's perfect for cutting down on car journeys while fitting in a little extra exercise. Sign onto the Beryl app and then you can pick up a bike at any Beryl Bay and drop it off at any other bay within the operating area, ensuring maximum flexibility for your trips. The app clearly indicates where all the Beryl Zones and bays are, so you'll always know where to go.
Councillor Richard Biggs at the Helm
This exciting development wouldn't have been possible without Councillor Richard Biggs’ persistent advocacy. His dedication to expanding sustainable transport options in the area has been instrumental in making the new bays a reality. Councillor Biggs said, "The missing link in the network was Poundbury, so it's great that this is now sorted." His continued efforts are building a greener and more connected community that we can all enjoy.
How Far Can You Ride?
There's no specific distance limit for your ride, but all bikes must stay within the designated Beryl Zone shown in the app. Commuting to work, running errands, or enjoying a leisurely ride? The zone provides ample coverage for all your cycling needs.
Costs and Restrictions
The scheme is designed to be accessible and budget-friendly. Typically, there is a small unlock fee and a per-minute charge for each ride. For frequent riders, the app offers cost-saving passes and minute bundles. Remember, you must be at least 16 years old to hire a Beryl bike, and all bikes must be used and parked in line with the scheme's rules.
What Happens If Bikes Aren't Returned?
It's important to park your bike at a designated Beryl Bay to avoid extra charges. Parking outside a bay or leaving the bike outside the operating zone can result in additional fees, which are clearly outlined in the app. Bikes that aren't returned or are lost could incur fines of up to £500, so always ensure the bike is securely docked when you're done.
